Very little is known about this barn but we spoke with the owner Rob Hall. He told us it was owned previously by Felter Stevens. While doing research at the Greene County Historical and Genealogical Society, we found out that Felter Stevens lived from 1901 to 1970. He worked as a dairy farmer and this was believed to be the purpose of the barn. As we dug deeper more interesting information was revealed. While searching through the files on the Stevens families, we came across the name Felter more than once. Not just in regards to the man but also the long lost town of Felter. This town was incorporated on January 12, 1880 but just as soon as it was created, it was disbanded January 31, 1902. It was located west of Martin’s Prarie Church outside of Roodhouse. And so, we continued to try and find a connection between the two. Felter Stevens was the son of James J Stevens and Cora E Davis. He had two brothers Rupert and Edward and one sister Nellie Abbott. As was customary for the time, women after bearing children would give their maiden or family name to their sons. So we looked closer at Felter’s mother. Cora’s father was Charles A (Gus) Davis and her mother was the daughter of William W Felter who was a squire out of Alton and a significant land owner. It is not known for sure if he is the founder of the town, but we will keep you updated as more information is revealed.
