Greene County Courthouse - Carrollton, Illinois

In 1890 it was decided that a new court house would be built to replace the earlier 1830’s building. Henry Elliott, a Chicago architect, was commissioned to design the new building. The contract, for construction, was awarded to Frederick Menske of Quincy. The bid was $39,700.00.
The cornerstone was laid, June 10, 1891, and at least eight thousand people were on hand for the event. The building was completed in March of 1882 and the county board moved to accept it at a total cost of $40, 231. This building has changed very little over time. The extirer wall is of 8 inch thick Berea sandstone against layers of brick. The tower rises 100 feet. A clock fir the tower was purchased in the summer of 1893.
